Episode #3—Papal Snapshot: Pagan Historian Acknowledges Papal Authority (mid 300s)

“CULTIVATING SAINTS, SAGES, AND STATESMEN THROUGH THE GREAT TRADITION”

EPISODE SUMMARY
In this episode, our founder Joshua Charles inaugurates a new “mini-series” called “Papal Snapshots.” Each Papal Snapshot will examine one story, document, or quote from the ancient Church, and unpack what it reveals about the nature and extent of papal authority.

This first Papal Snapshot covers the remarkable acknowledgement of papal authority in the mid-300s by an ancient pagan historian, Ammianus Marcellinus. His account not only mentions the higher authority of the Pope without further comment, but discusses the acknowledgement of this authority by the Roman Emperor Constantius as well in the midst of the Arian crisis.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matt. 6:19-21).
